Match Report: Bournemouth C vs Southbourne D

Bournemouth C vs Southbourne D

3rd May 2022

Division 4 Result: 2:2

We hoped for a win, but finished match with a draw. All games were competitive. Mine was particularly difficult, as I was not at my best after playing in a Tournament over the weekend and made several blunders, which allowed Ken to finish with a pawn ending.

Board 4 where Brian stepped in to replace Arthur, he fought hard but just failed to gain an advantage against talented junior Florence who prevailed in a good win.

We have one match remaining against Poole and thanks to Andrew and Femis wins, the league is still winnable  in last match.

Match Report: New Milton B vs Bournemouth B

29th March 2022

Division 3 Result: 2:2

Match two with New Milton B we had the same players on each board as previous week. Steve managed to win an exchange but was down a pawn in the endgame and in the end they agreed to a draw since both players were running low on time. Daniel on board 2 had a closed game and then opened it up when he really shouldn’t have! He was losing quite badly but thankfully wriggled long enough that his opponent began to fall very low on time so agreed a draw. Rob on board 3 an interesting tactical looking game that was very unclear for large parts of it, though he ended up losing in the end. Finally Femi on board 4 had a low rated opponent which he swiftly blasted off the board with dynamic play.  So two matches, two draws but a solid result that shows we are hard to beat!

Match Report: Bournemouth B vs New Milton B

23rd March 2022

Division 3 Result: 2:2

First of our New Milton B matches which we played at home. We had Steve Bolton on board 1 who managed a long but comfortable draw. Board 2 was Daniel Miles and after a very postional game it liquidated to an endgame with an even pawn structure and opposite coloured bishops. Draw. Rob Willington was on board 3 and was hard pressed for a time but managed to equalise the position and they agreed to a draw. Board 4 was Femi Oloyede who had a very complicated game and Femi offered a draw since it was a scary position though perhaps prematurely since they played on after agreeing to a draw and he would have won! Never mind a draw was still a good result overall.

Match Report: Highcliffe C vs Bournemouth C

Monday 21st March 2022

Division 4 Result: 2.5 : 1.5

Team arrived to meet a very strong Highcliffe team indeed. Femi again won a well contested game, Andrew did his best against Highcliffe with a very talented lady player and agreed a draw. On board 3 Brian in his first over the board game met a young man who had helped to demolish our plucky Baccus team. He proved far too good player, but Brian gained valuable experience. On Board 5 Neo started very well in opening gaining an advantage, but got beaten in a tightly played end game. We lost  but remain top of 4th division.

I'll be back playing in next match after playing in Fareham Congress this weekend

Bournemouth A Team vs Ringwood

Tuesday 15th March 2022

Division 2 DCL Result: 2:2

The A team are improving in every match. Dennis on board 1 had an excellent win against a higher graded opponent who regularly plays in the top division. So tonight's results were most encouraging for club.

Bournemouth B vs Southbourne C

Wednesday 16th March 2022

Division 3 Result:  3.5 : 0.5

Our B Team, now taken over by Daniel, (as Joseph's work has taken him to Bristol) won his first match in charge. Everyone played their part and the team moved above Wimborne in league. This was without our board 1, who is on holiday, so an even stronger team is expected in future matches.

Bournemouth A vs Southbourne B

Tuesday 8th March 2022

Division 2 Result: 3:1

A good nights chess, played in a friendly atmosphere, where Bournemouth just edged a close contest, which was much tighter than the final result.

Board 1 being the key game, in which both players had winning chances. Antal's all out kingside attack running into Dennis - only move - offer of a "pseudo Queen sacrifice" which exploited White's back rank issues and defenceless King.

Acceptance of this leading to checkmate, or bolstering it's defences to exchanges, resulting in a winning endgame for Black, due to his extra pawns. Another nail-biter between these players!

Tuesday 15th February 2022

Division 2 Result: 2:2

Again a close contest between these teams. Where on both Boards 1 and 4, all the players were down to their last couple of minutes. David on Board 1, pulling off a fine win via a pin on Black's rook, shortly followed by Paolo's material advantage proving decisive, on Board 4, levelling up the scores!

So another 2-2 result v Poole B. With no away goals rule in force, the decider will take place in April!

Division 4 Result: 4:0

Top of Division 4 after this 4/O win. It's interesting when you are a senior player, playing a game against young talented players, whose smart phone after the game tells them if they should have won! According to smart phone he had equivalent to a queen advantage after gaining a big advantage when I blundered playing Modern Defence against E4. Next time I won't be so lucky! On other three boards that followed everyone played extremly well and we go top with 8 points.

Tuesday 25th January 2022

Result: 0.5:3.5

Despite losing to a very strong junior team backed up by coach Stephen on board 4, we had a great evening of chess. Thanks to Peter on board 4 we avoided a white wash by getting his first positive drawn result. The inexperience players gained priceless knowledge and this shows the true value of Baccus league. I am proud of my team.

Div 4 Result: 2:2

The match did not give us the result we wanted, but new player Femi had a good start with a strong performance resulting in a win. I had win in an end game and we were 2 nil up, but Southbourne played really well to win in remaining games and gain their first league points. As we've been locked down for so long these experienced players will play up to their true grades. We will certainly expect another close match on return match at Liberal club.

DCL Division 2 Match

Dorchester B vs Bournemouth A

Result 2.5:1.5

Exciting match with it  all hinging on final game. This time a enterprising pawn sacrifice by Thorsten, didn't gain the advantage on board 3 and Dorchester won. Notable win by Dennis on Board 1, while I could secure win against  John on Board 4. We were getting close, but good play forced a drawn end game.

Thank you to all the Dorchester team we look forward to return match at Bournemouth.

Highcliffe B vs Bournemouth B

Monday 10th January 2022

Division 3 Result: 2.5 : 1.5

Despite being out-rated across the board it turned out to be a close and exciting match. The first game to finish was board 2, where Dan, unprepared for 1.b4, panicked and lost his rook very early in the opening, correct play by Richard ensured it was a quick win for white. Board 2 was a much closer affair, with both players happy to take the draw. Over to my game on board 3 and despite some strong defensive play from Neil, my attack proved too strong and being material down with more about to fall, Neil resigned. So with the scores level at 1.5-1.5 all eyes turned to board 4 where a very tight game was being played. Knowing a win was needed to seal the match, Tom declined a draw offer from Rob and this decision proved to be the correct one, as subsequently a few moves later an inaccurate move from Rob gave Tom an opportunity which he took, creating a past pawn and that was it, the game was Tom’s and the match Highcliffe’s!

A big thank you to Richard and the rest of the Highcliffe team for being such welcoming host!.

Tuesday 7th December 2021

Result: 1.5 : 2.5

Thanks to the Highcliffe team for a well contested match. Won by the Highcliffe Castles. Despite being outgraded on all boards our Bournemouth players recorded the best result of the season.

Special mention to Greta who won her first game for the team. Tony had a spendid draw on Board 1. Peter our reserve took Paiges place on board 4, he lost on time, gaining valuable experience. Lastly Will had chances to win, but lost in the end, but he's improving in every game he plays.

Great evening for all.

Division 4 Result: 3:1

We had played Poole a week earlier which was well contested. Again Paulo was last to finish, but got a better end game with a pawn advantage.

I played board 2 and was lucky to win.  Earlier in the game I could have lost the exchange, but I won a piece later to secure a win.

Our board 3 and 4 both were drawn games, but tight contests.

Thanks to Poole for a great evening of chess.

Poole B vs Bournemouth A

Thursday 2nd December 2021

Division 2 Result: 2:2

It was indeed a busy Poole Club evening! In addition to our match Poole B - Bournemouth A, there was also a Bacchus match taking place, in the Playing Room, with about 4/5 spectators watching the games, some of whom couldn't help talking on occasion, not really surprising there was some shhh-ing going on!

The match had a wonderfully complicated sacrificial game on Board 1, where it was extremely difficult for Ritchie and Dennis to calculate all the lines within in the tight time control. Both players had "wins" at various stages of their journey through the complications, congratulations to Richie!

Boards 2 and 3 were hard fought draws, and with only the Board 4 game remaining, Paolo "saved our evening out" with some deft positional play, clinching a win in the closing stages of his game with Simon.

A worthy drawn match, and a good night's chess for all concerned!

John Torrance

An important match for our A team playing  in Divison 2. Although outgraded they achieved an excellent drawn match against Poole, who had won every game so far. I should like to make special mention of John's game against Fuller, a key draw result against a high graded player who has played most of his chess for Poole club in their first team. All our players played very well on the night, but for me John was man of the match.

Division 4 Result  3:1

A very good match, which went to the wire on board 1, with Paolo just winning with extra pawn advantage. Andrew had a good win against a very experienced opponent. Paul on board 4 said a draw was a fair result as Rachel played a very good game. My game was a draw against Roger and I was extremely lucky not to have lost!

What should have been an easy victory was  far from easy! Only Andrew, who normally because of time restraints struggles with long game, made light work compared to rest of team. But what is clear is the team effort won the day.

Many thanks to Highcliffe great chess match.
